[REVIEW] “Anaconda” is a slithery spiritual sequel that put a smile on my face

Or should I say a s-s-s-smile? Everyone goes through a midlife crashout at some point in their lives but the Anaconda gang’s version of an “Eat, Pray, Love” moment was a run-and-gun indie shoot in the Amazonian forest.

Doug McCallister (Jack Black) is a frustrated filmmaker who makes his living as a wedding videographer and seemingly convinces himself that it’s an acceptable “B+ life.” However, his creative hunger for artistic expression bleeds into his work as he attempts to amp up the monotony of endless couple videos set to “I Don’t Want To Wait” by Paula Cole.

His longtime bestfriend Ronald “Griff” Griffen Jr. (Paul Rudd), is a struggling actor who’s often relegated to background roles and wants to finally have his main character moment. Griff tries draging Doug into remaking/rebooting/creating a spiritual sequel for Anaconda with a lot of pushback and reservations. However when Dougs rewatches their childhood short film, “The Quatch,” on VHS tape, and with some encouragement from his family, he eventually agrees. Along for the wild ride are the recently divorced Claire Simons (Thandiwe Newton) and recently “Buffalo Sober” Kenny Trent (Steve Zahn).

KRAKEN MAE’S SPEEDRUN MOVIE RAMBLINGS 🐍(•ᴗ•,, )

ANACONDA

What happens when a bunch of Gen X friends collectively have a midlife crashout? They fly to the Amazonian forest to film a “spiritual sequel” to the 1997 creature feature film, Anaconda. What started out as a comedy of errors about independent filmmaking eventually escalated into an all-out monster film.

As someone who watched the original Anaconda movie as a kid, I was amused by the many callbacks in this film. Paul Rudd and Jack Black’s chemistry as chaotic besties was off the charts and adding Thandiwe Newton and Steve Zahn into the mix made it all the more entertaining! That’s a stacked cast for any ’90s kid who grew up with the first movie. I really enjoyed the direction they took this film!

On a meta level, I appreciate the utmost seriousness in which they approached the filmmaking process for an action comedy, providing the usual emotional beats that make a blockbuster hit to such an unserious premise. Imagine witnessing a slow-motion triumphant take of a character whizzing on their friend’s leg. (Absolute cinema!)

Anaconda is about a bunch of grownups who are being unapologetically silly and tapping into their childlike energy. On both a meta and fictional level, these Gen X actors, whom I grew up watching, looked like they were having an absolute blast shooting the entire movie. They say ridiculous lines with dedication such as “a double headbutt is pretty revolutionary” and to paraphrase, “the snake is a metaphor that comes for all of us when our dreams remain unrealized.”

This slithery spiritual sequel made me snort out loud several times as it shouts out its predecessor with heart and humor. Goes to show that you’re never too old to play pretend!

Tita Kraken Bonus Points ദ്ദി (๑ᵔ⤙ᵔ๑)୨୧

I’m giving extra points for aspects in a film that ping my personal preferences.

✅ Switcheroo of Roles (Switche-Roles)

Can you imagine Jack Black as the calmer and saner part of a comedy duo? Yes, Jack Black’s character, “the mild-mannered” auteur Doug was set up as the “straight man” to Paul Rudd’s more impulsive thespian Griff. However, their real-life personalities could not help hamming it up in every scene such as the “accent off” between Doug and Griff. Both characters are both chaotic in different fonts and their attempts to out-ham each other levels up the entertainment.

✅ Epic Typing Montage

That typing montage featuring Jack Black furiously keyboard smashing while ideas there’s scenic background projected against him? That is how I shall imagine my writing process from now on.

✅ Stacked ’90s Cast

Watching Paul Rudd, Jack Black, Steve Zahn, and Thandiwe Newton going on a wild adventure together hits differently when you grew up in the ’90s.

✅ Unc and Auntie/Tito and Tita Energy

“I don’t wanna wait, man. Our lives could be, like, over.”

✅ Self-Aware Commentary

“THEMES!” “Grief, revenge, intergenerational trauma!” “Now it’s about something!” “You could be the white Jordan Peele!”

✅ Slapstick Comedy and Toilet Humor

Remember Jack Black running in a panic with a boar strapped to his head from the trailer? Even if you know it was happening, finding out the actual context makes the scene even better. And you know how movies try to increase dramatic tension with slow-motion as they depict a character eventually achieving victory over their personal obstacle? Anaconda gave the very same triumphant treatment to a “pee shy” guy finally whizzing on their friend’s leg in public.

✅ Cameo Callbacks

I never knew I needed a film dedicated to the 1997 Anaconda film until now. The latest version even recreates memorable scenes such as the movie poster and the snake regurgitating its prey in a grossout manner. Some of the cast from the original film even make a brief appearance.

✅ Relatable Midlife Crashout

The Anaconda gang’s version of an “Eat, Pray, Love” moment was a run-and-gun indie shoot in the Amazonian forest.

“This is a B+ life we’re talking about!”

A giant anaconda also made its appearance at the premiere, peeking at the top of the photowall, with the cast having fun posing with the figure. Official synopsis: THIS IS NOT A REBOOT.  It is an entirely original comedy, inspired by the cinematic ‘classic’ Anaconda, that features Doug (Jack Black) and Griff (Paul Rudd), who have been best friends since they were kids and always dreamed of remaking their all-time favorite movie. When a midlife crisis pushes them to finally go for it, they head deep into the Amazon to start filming. But things get real when an actual giant anaconda appears, turning their comically chaotic movie set into a deadly situation.

Anaconda slithers its way to Philippine theaters on January 8. Anaconda is distributed in the Philippines by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Connect with the hashtag #AnacondaMovie @columbiapicph

Comedy superstars Paul Rudd and Jack Black are let loose deep in the Amazon jungle in “Anaconda

One of the core components for co-writer Kevin Etten and co-writer-director Tom Gornician in making the comedy adventure Anaconda is getting actors who can face a truly terrifying situation while still keeping things fun. “Tom and I have done this kind of ‘comedy under duress’ before, in which we take people who are wildly unequipped to handle the situations in which they land. We throw the craziest obstacles at them, and let them be idiots, while letting them play the real fear of the situation. We wanted to stay as far away as we could from winking at the danger and not feeling the stakes, and to feel as real as possible,” Etten explains.

They felt that they truly hit the jackpot with Jack Black and Paul Rudd, with Thandiwe Newton, Steve Zahn, Daniela Melchior and Selton Mello to support them. “Jack, Paul, Thandiwe, Steve, Selton, and Daniela all have such great comedic instincts,” Etten continues. “They always played it real but knew how to tweak that just a little bit to get a big laugh.”

In Anaconda, two best friends, Doug (Jack Black) and Griff “Paul Rudd” throw caution to the wind and venture deep into the Amazon to fulfill their childhood dream: shooting a remake of their favorite film Anaconda.  An actual giant anaconda soon makes an appearance, turning their already chaotic movie set into a deadly situation.

Gornician and Etten’s previous work, the critically acclaimed action comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent was one of the main draws for Paul Rudd to collaborate with them. “When it was released, I watched that film four times – I was obsessed with it,” he remembers. “It was clever, funny, and unique. Similarly, this Anaconda is layered with laughs, action, and surprises.”

Gornician, in turn, praises Rudd and Black as the perfect duo at the center stage of Anaconda. “Jack and Paul are incredible performers. We wanted to make Jack the straight man and Paul the comedy character, which is a reversal of their regular casting, to see if we could bring something fresh to the table. Jack as the emotional center; Paul as the wildcard. Those two can find the funny in any situation. Made my job much easier.”

Rudd loves the balance of danger and comedy in Anaconda, the two often playing off each other, resulting in hilarious situations. “It’s a tricky thing to balance,” says Rudd, “and Tom always made it very real, except for key moments. It was wonderful for us as actors to feel taken care of in that way. Tom has such clarity of what he’s going for.”

Black agrees, happy to be a part of a movie with such a unique premise. “It’s not just a comedy. It’s an action comedy. There’s a giant snake. The danger is real, and we played that for real. It’s funny, it’s exciting. I love making movies and I love stories about people making movies. I think there’s a big audience for this kind of storytelling.”

At the end of it all Gornician only has one goal in making Anaconda, and it’s to bring laughter and fun to the audience. “My sincere hope is that audiences have fun. It’s a strange time in the world right now, and this film for me is an escape to another place with characters I hope you’ll love. It’s a big-hearted joyride through the jungle that will thrill you and make you laugh in equal parts,” he says.
