FOC NA SI FOC! Father\u2019s Of Circumstances Is Now Free of Charge!<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n What makes a father? Is it blood, presence, choice\u2014or circumstance?<\/em><\/p>\n This June, Fathers of Circumstances<\/b> brings together five deeply moving films from Japan and <\/em>the Philippines that challenge conventional ideas of fatherhood. The screenings will take place <\/em>on June 20-21, 2025 at Cine Adarna, UPFI Film Center. <\/b>curated by Eunice Helera, a film <\/em>programmer and festival coordinator. The program is part of the Professional Development <\/b><\/em>and Networking Initiative for ASEAN-Japan Film Programmers and Curators, organized <\/b><\/em>by the Japan Foundation in partnership with the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF). <\/em>The lineup features Like Father, Like Son (2013) by Hirokazu Kore-eda, Dear Etranger (2017) <\/em>by Yukiko Mishima, Close-Knit (2017) by Naoko Ogigami, Kinakausap ni Celso ang Diyos <\/em>(2024) by Gilb Baldoza, and Ang Tatay Kong Nanay (1978) by Lino Brocka.<\/em><\/p>\n These films span across class, gender, and kinship\u2014offering a spectrum of what it means to <\/em>care, provide, and stay. Kore-eda\u2019s exploration of fatherhood from both affluent and <\/em>working-class perspectives finds resonance in Baldoza\u2019s Filipino fathers, who may lack money <\/em>but never intention. In Mishima\u2019s Dear Etranger, the longing to be accepted as a stepfather is <\/em>quiet and piercing. In Close-Knit and Ang Tatay Kong Nanay, it is a transgender woman and a <\/em>gay man who step into the role of parent\u2014not through biology, but through pure will and love.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThis program is deeply personal,<\/em>\u201d Helera shares. <\/em>\u201cI never got to fully experience the <\/em>love of my biological father, who passed three years ago. What I\u2019ve carried since is grief, <\/em>longing, and the imagination of what could have been. But I was raised by other father <\/em>figures\u2014my stepdad, who silently cheered me on since grade school. My grandfather, <\/em>who filled in whenever no one else could. Two uncles, one of whom became a mentor <\/em>who shaped the path I\u2019m now walking. And a queer aunt who showed up with fierce <\/em>loyalty and care.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Screenings will be followed by talkbacks, including guest appearances and a Q&A with some of <\/em>the film directors.
