“This is Mary’s time…the system doesn’t work if we hold on too long.”\u00a0Downton Abbey\u00a0<\/em>has always been a comfort series for me as the familiar opening theme transports us to a cozy place with rich people problems and low-stakes challenges. After several seasons and a few films under the franchise,\u00a0Downton Abbey<\/em> finally bids goodbye in this last installment. Indeed, many tears were shed and Dame Maggie Smith’s biting witticisms were sorely missed. (The other characters wouldn’t have gotten away with most of their exploits if The Dowager Countess was still around.)<\/p>\n

I was pleased to share this experience with my LDR bestie and fellow vintage girly, Audrey, as we both dressed up as if we were preparing for a busy social season. We also fangirled over the historical fashion, the posh dramatics, and emotional farewell from a beloved cast of characters. (Thankfully, neither of us were banished from the ball due to constant giggling and squeeing.)<\/p>\n

“Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale<\/em> is entertaining enough, although feels a bit rushed in some parts. It embraces the changing times and what that means for the characters, both above and below stairs, and includes plenty of references to the series and especially the late Dame Maggie Smith. All in all, it\u2019s a nice ending to the beloved franchise.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes gives us a peek into what the Crawleys and their staff are up to at the start of the film, \u201cThe Crawleys are doing pretty well. Despite the changing times, they are still a great family living in a great house. There is an air of change in their relationships with their servants and with ordinary people living in the village. The two world wars brought about a narrowing of the gap in the human experience and the aristocratic families were facing the wrong way in history after both wars. The film touches upon these changing times. One of the storylines in the film is Mary getting a divorce, and what I hope will surprise audiences is the extent to which divorce was not accepted until much later.\u201d<\/p>\n

For director Simon Curtis, the film will dive deeper into the characters people have grown to love, and their thoughts on the changing eras. \u201cThis film is a loving portrait of the characters as they enter the 1930s, and we really dig into the characters’ emotions at the end of the story we’re telling. The central storyline is that Lady Mary is getting divorced, which is a massive issue in 1930, especially for a family of this social standing.\u201d<\/p>\n

He praises his longtime collaborator Julian Fellowes for going above and beyond for the script of Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. \u201cJulian has such great humanity, and he gives every character, no matter what their class or their sex or their age, dignity, wit and warmth. I love those little moments of humanity between the different characters, with the added poignancy that, very often, these moments are their final moments together.\u201d<\/p>\n
