“Sinners” is more than a horror film, it’s a cultural, musical period piece. As a vintage-loving girly, I am living for the old-school fashion but turns out, there was so much more in store. I watched it days ago and I’m still reeling from the experience. Sharing my post-movie reaction about the film:<\/p>\n

Initially, I thought it was just a period piece with vampires but the way they put African-American culture at the forefront and the social climate of the 1930s dust bowl era, really elevated the experience for me. There were many layers and implications on what it means to acquire freedom through any means. And the way they visualized the power of music and how it reflected the times and unified the people. I really had to stop and stare in awe. Amazing work!<\/p>\n

Sinners<\/em> comes out in the Philippines this Black Saturday, April 19 in cinemas nationwide! I think it’s very fitting that it comes out at the tail-end of Holy Week.<\/p>\n

Director Ryan Coogler\u2019s earliest memories of movies were \u201cwhile sitting in a darkened room, full of strangers, and being absolutely terrified by something that was happening on the screen,\u201d shares the critically acclaimed writer-director of films including \u201cCreed\u201d and \u201cBlack Panther.\u201d \u201cThat feeling of being with others, the unison, the horror and delight made me feel like home. That\u2019s where it began for me\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

With his new film \u201cSinners,\u201d Coogler hopes that movie audiences will have that same unforgettable experience. Starring Michael B. Jordan in his fifth collaboration with Coogler, \u201cSinners\u201d tells the story of twin brothers Smoke and Stack, who return to their hometown to start again after having lived troubled lives, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Sinners\u2019 is so many things,\u201d says Jordan about his longtime collaborator and friend\u2019s latest project. \u201cIt has so many layers to it. I want people to take away everything that we intended to shoot and make and create. It\u2019s a fun experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want them to have fun, but I also want them to think as well. On the ride home, or in the shower, or at home with their family, I want them to still be thinking about the movie and the characters, and spark conversations. That\u2019s what I love about movies \u2013 they just make people think differently and get to know things, spaces and places that they might not have been in contact with before. But also, to have fun being a little scared. I really want them to enjoy the music\u2026 I want people to feel the musical element in their bones.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ahead of its opening in cinemas, \u201cSinners\u201d has impressed critics and currently has a 99% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.<\/p>\n

In their review, The Hollywood Reporter writes that \u201cSinners\u201d is \u201csmart horror, even poetic at times, with much to say about race and spiritual freedom\u2026 It\u2019s also an exactingly crafted movie that demands to be seen on the biggest possible screen, with the loudest sound system.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRyan Coogler\u2019s best movie so far is a bloody, bluesy, and throbbingly fun vampire saga,\u201d raves IndieWire.<\/p>\n

Deadline Hollywood also praised the movie, saying, \u201c\u2018Sinners\u2019 marks another strong reason why Coogler is at the top of his generation of filmmakers, and Jordan continues to show why he is a real-deal movie star.\u201d<\/p>\n
