THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SEARCH FOR SQUAREPANTS
The SpongeBob Movie unlocks a mysterious area that’s ripe for exploration way beneath the sea. Under-where (underwear)? Underworld! During SpongeBob’s journey into becoming the BIG GUY swashbuckler, the yellow sponge, Patrick, and his rescuers end up battling the many kid-friendly horrors lurking inside the lair. Seeing SpongeBob and Patrick conquer these challenges in their own chaotic cheerful way provide most of the entertainment.
However, the downside for me was the absence of the boss babes from Bikini Bottom, who already made a splash in last year’s Plankton: The Movie. Sure, Sandy Cheeks (voiced by Carolyn Lawrence) had a short and sweet appearance but where are our other girls? We needed the feminine energy of Mrs. Puff (voiced by Mary Jo Catlett) and Karen the Computer (voiced by Jill Talley). And the most glaring omission, since this is a bit of a Krab-centric piece, his daughter Pearl Krabs (voiced by Lori Alan). My hopes for a Pearl pop-up were completely dashed at the Bikini Bottom High School scene. I’m also curious as to whether this skips continuity as SpongeBob and the gang have already encountered the Flying Dutchman a few times before the events of the movie. I’m also sad about the late great SpongeBob creator, Stephen Hillenburg, not being around to oversee these projects but I feel like this movie still honors the legacy.
The SpongeBob Movie: Search For Squarepants was definitely a fun ride with a family-friendly scary twist! SpongeBob has always been an oddity in the best way possible and this film further drives (dives?) home the lesson on being yourself and embracing your quirks, no matter how cringe others may perceive them to be because you are one-of-a-kind in this world. So, take up space and shout out loud, “I’M READY!”

Mark Hamill hamming it up!
Although he’s best known for being a space hero, I’m partial to his more villainous roles. True to his name, Hamill’s over-the-top portrayal ATE and left no crumbs. A standout scene includes Spongebob and the Flying Dutchman giggling together and then the latter suddenly unleashes a scary, guttural laugh before going back to normal. Also, their final showdown at the rollercoaster was epic!
More Clancy Brown!
My bias is showing since he’s one of my celeb crushes but come on, this man has quite the range! I’m glad that his character, Mr. Krabs, got some of the spotlight in this film, and that Brown had a human role (albeit in a brief scene at the beginning) to flex the face card.
SpongeBob x Patrick BFF Moments
SpongeBob and Patrick’s friendship will always be the anchor of the franchise, which the film recognizes by giving the pink starfish a significant role as the yellow sponge’s emotional support. Patrick delivered on the laughs and their BFF hijinks together is always fun to watch.
The “Big Guy” theme song
I have been singing and dancing this Ice Spice bop since it dropped.

Turtle power! Before the SpongeBob Movie plays, there’s a short film featuring the latest iteration of these turtles in a half-shell. Since the movie came out during the Christmas season abroad, there’s a holiday vibe to this plus, some commentary on AI. My favorite part was all the fandom references which were barely skirting an IP violation. Nothing like a good parody to set the vibe.

To help get fans and movie audiences in SpongeBob’s Big Guy Era mode, a fun and catchy new song was released by rapper and songwriter Ice Spice, a proud Spongebob fan. “I grew up watching SpongeBob. I’m a huge fan,” says Ice Spice in a featurette for the movie. The song has inspired kids and kids-at-heart to post videos of themselves dancing along to the infectious ditty, sparking a dance craze.
